The importance of a good night’s sleep

Find out why sleep is so important
The benefits of a good night’s sleep

Sleep may seem like a given, but it is one of the cornerstones of our health. On average, people in the Netherlands sleep around 7 hours and 12 minutes a night, and 63% are often dissatisfied with the quality of their sleep. If we spend so much time sleeping, why do we often not do it properly? And more importantly: why is sleep so crucial for our bodies and minds? In this blog, you’ll discover the positive effects of getting enough sleep and the consequences of a lack of it.

What are the positive effects of getting enough sleep?

Sleep is vital for your health and happiness, as getting enough sleep has positive effects on both your physical and mental health. Sleep is just as important as regular exercise and a balanced diet.

Physically, sleep aids the healing and recovery of the heart and blood vessels. It also ensures that the hormones regulating how hungry or full you feel are balanced, so you do not crave food when your body does not actually need it. This helps you maintain a healthy weight.

For children and teenagers, deep sleep enables the body to produce and release the hormone that promotes regular growth. The same hormone, somatotropin, also stimulates muscle mass and helps repair cells and tissues in people of all ages. Sleep also helps keep the immune system healthy, so that it can fight common infections.

Mentally, sleep helps your brain to function properly. When you sleep, new neural pathways form in the brain that help you learn and remember information, and it improves your problem-solving skills. Sleep also helps you to pay attention, make decisions and be creative. So whether you have to go to school the next day or face a long day at work, getting enough sleep helps you get through the day.

What are the negative effects of sleep deprivation?

Sleep deprivation or a lack of sufficient sleep has a detrimental effect on getting enough sleep. Whilst sufficient sleep helps you maintain a healthy weight, sleep deprivation can increase the risk of obesity. Physically, sleep deprivation increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and strokes.

Studies have shown that too little sleep negatively alters activity in certain parts of the brain. It can lead to difficulties with decision-making, problem-solving, managing your emotions and behaviour, and coping with change. Sleep deprivation has also been linked to increased feelings of stress and problems with concentration. Finally, studies have shown that sleep deprivation can be linked to depression, suicide and increased risk-taking.

How much sleep do you need?

There is no single answer to this question; it varies from person to person. Most adults need between 6 and 9 hours of sleep each night, whilst children need more. The youngest children, up to 1 year old, should get between 12 and 16 hours of sleep a day, including naps, whilst teenagers need 8 to 10 hours a night.

How can I sleep better?

Getting enough sleep every night can sometimes be tricky, but it helps to establish a clear routine. Start by deciding what time you need to get up in the morning and work backwards from there to choose a fixed bedtime. Try to stick to these times as much as possible, even at the weekend. This way, your body develops a stable sleep rhythm. Catching up on sleep only works occasionally, so make sure it doesn’t become a regular habit.

Small habits can also improve your sleep quality. Try not to look at your laptop, phone or other screens before going to bed. The blue light from these screens keeps your brain active and can disrupt melatonin production. Instead, opt for relaxing activities, such as reading a good book, going for a short walk or taking a hot shower.

For a better night’s sleep, it also helps to sleep in a quiet, dark and cool room. Avoid heavy meals and caffeine late in the evening and ensure you get enough exercise during the day. Regular exercise isn’t just good for your physical health, but also helps you fall asleep more quickly and sleep more deeply.

Finally, listen to your body. If you feel tired during the day and struggle to concentrate, this could be a sign that you need more rest.

Sleep well for more energy and better health

In short, a good night’s sleep is not a luxury, but an essential foundation for a healthy and happy life. By consciously paying attention to your sleep and making small adjustments to your daily routine, you can already notice a big difference in how you feel, both physically and mentally. Those who sleep well function better and feel more energetic.
